How to Choose the Right Vape Juice in the UK

Choosing the right vape juice comes down to four things: nicotine strength, PG/VG ratio, nicotine type (freebase or salt), and flavour. Get those four right for your device and your habits, and everything else is personal preference. Here's how to work through each one.
1. Start with Nicotine Strength
In the UK, e-liquid nicotine strength is legally capped at 20mg/ml, and bottles are sold in a few standard strengths: 0mg, 3mg, 6mg, 10mg, and 20mg, among others.
If you're switching from cigarettes, it's better to start slightly higher than you think you need. Too low and you won't feel satisfied, which is one of the most common reasons people give up on vaping and go back to smoking.
2. Understand Freebase Nicotine VS Nicotine Salts
This is where a lot of people get confused, but it's simple once it clicks.
Freebase nicotine is the traditional form used in a lot of e-liquids. It's available in a range of strengths and gives a stronger throat hit at higher mg levels, which is why freebase juices are usually sold in strengths like 3mg, 6mg, 12, and 18mg — high strengths would be harsh in a freebase form.
Nicotine salts are a modified form of nicotine that's smoother at higher strengths. This is what makes 20mg vape juice possible without it feeling harsh on the throat. Nic salts also absorb into the bloodstream faster, which more closely mimics the sensation of a cigarette.
The general rule: if you're using a small pod kit and want a strong hit that feels like smoking, go for nic salts at 10–20mg. If you're using a bigger tank or mod for flavour and vapour, freebase at a lower strength (3–10mg) is usually the better fit.
3. Get the PG/VG Ratio Right for Your Device
PG (propylene glycol) and VG (vegetable glycerine) are the two base liquids that carry the nicotine and flavour. The ratio between them changes how the juice behaves:
Higher PG (e.g. 50/50) — stronger throat hit, thinner liquid, more pronounced flavour, works in most devices including simple pod kits with 0.6ohm,0.8ohm, 1.2ohm pods anything lower than a 0.6 ohm pod should be used with the Higher Vg juice as it will produce more vapour and use more liquid.
Higher VG (e.g. 70/30 or 80/20) — smoother, thicker liquid, bigger vapour clouds, needs a sub-ohm tank or pod to vape properly and will typically use 0.15, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.45 coil resistances.
If you're using a starter kit or pod system, it's best to stick to 50/50 e-liquids or nic salts — high-VG juice can struggle to wick properly in low-power devices and will cause leaks if not burnt at the right temperature. If you've moved on to a sub-ohm tank, higher VG juices are where you'll get the cloud and flavour these devices are built for.
4. Shortfills and Nic shots — How UK Bottles Work
You'll often see e-liquid sold as a shortfill — a bottle (50ml, 100ml) filled with 0mg juice but with extra headroom, sold alongside separate 10ml nic shots. This packaging exists because of UK regulations limiting nicotine-containing e-liquid bottles to 10ml.
Add one or two 10ml nic shots to a 50ml shortfill and you'll land around 3mg or 6mg once mixed. It's a cost-effective way to buy larger volumes of your favourite flavour and still control your own strength.
If you'd rather not deal with mixing, ready-mixed 10ml bottles and nic salt bottles are available at every standard strength and are the simpler option.
5. Then, and only then, pick a flavour
Once strength, nicotine type, and PG/VG suit your device, flavour is genuinely down to preference. Broad categories to try:
Tobacco — familiar, often used as a bridge flavour when quitting smoking
Menthol/mint — cooling, popular for all-day vaping
Fruit — the most widely used category in the UK, huge variety
Dessert — sweeter, richer profiles, usually paired with higher-VG juice
Drinks-inspired — colas, juices, and similar novelty flavours
Taste is subjective and flavour fatigue is real — most vapers end up rotating two or three go-to flavours rather than sticking to just one. Buying smaller bottles or trying samples before committing to a larger bottle is the easiest way to find what works for you without wasting money.
Factor | What to Check |
Nicotine strength | Match to how much you currently smoke or vape |
Nicotine type | Salts for pod kits & stronger hit, freebase for tanks & lower strengths |
PG/VG ratio | 50/50 for pod kits, higher VG for sub-ohm tanks/mods |
Format | Ready-mixed bottles for simplicity, shortfills + nic shots for value |
Flavour | Try small bottles first, expect to rotate favourites |
If you're not sure where to start, it's worth asking in person rather than guessing — the right nicotine strength and PG/VG ratio for your specific device makes a bigger difference to your experience than flavour ever will.
