MTL vs DTL Vaping: Which Draw Style Is Right for You?
Updated: Oct 13
If you've ever picked up a vape and felt like the draw was either too tight or too airy, you've already experienced the difference between MTL and DTL vaping. It's one of the most common questions we get in our vape shop in Southampton, so here's a plain-English breakdown.
What is MTL vaping?
MTL stands for mouth-to-lung. You draw the vapour into your mouth first, then inhale — exactly the same action as smoking a cigarette. The draw is tight, the vapour is cooler, and the throat hit is more noticeable. MTL vaping works best with nic salts at 10mg or 20mg and lower wattages, typically 10 to 25W.
Most pod kits are built for MTL. The Oxva NeXlim Go is an affordable MTL pod kit at £13.99 — well stocked, easy to use, and a solid starting point if you're new to vaping. The new OXVA Xlim 4 is also worth a look — a more versatile pod kit covering both MTL and RDL with UNITECH coils. The Vaporesso Luxe X3 is a great MTL choice with a large battery that lasts well — ideal if you want something reliable that doesn't need charging constantly. The Vaporesso Xros 6 is a newer option worth considering if you want something current. For a simple pen-style option, the Eleaf iStick 20W V2 is reliable and straightforward to use.
What is DTL vaping?
DTL stands for direct-to-lung. You inhale the vapour straight into your lungs in one breath. The draw is open, the vapour is warmer and denser, and you'll want lower nicotine — 0mg to 6mg freebase suits DTL best. Wattages start at 40W and go well beyond.
Box mods are built for DTL. The Voopoo Drag S3 runs at up to 60W and suits vapers moving up from pod kits — it has a built-in battery, which keeps it slim and simple. If you prefer a replaceable battery, the Voopoo Drag X3 is the same family but lets you swap cells when they wear out. For more power, the Vaporesso Armour Ultra runs at 100W and is a solid step up for experienced vapers who want more from their setup.
What about restricted DTL?
There's a middle ground — restricted direct-to-lung, or RDL. More open than MTL but tighter than full DTL. The Oxva VPrime 2 covers both MTL and RDL depending on which coil you fit and how you set the airflow.
Which is right for you?
Switching from cigarettes — start with MTL. It feels familiar and a higher nic strength satisfies cravings quickly.
Already vaping and want more vapour and flavour — try RDL or DTL with a lower nic strength.
